About Exalted
Exalted is a high-fantasy tabletop role-playing game set in Creation, a mythic world of divine rule, fallen empires, and cosmic cycles. Players take the roles of the Exalted—mortals chosen and empowered by the gods to reshape the world through heroic action. The game blends epic myth, wuxia-inspired action, and tragic hubris, placing characters in a setting where power is vast, history is heavy, and consequences echo across ages. Themes of legacy, corruption, responsibility, and the tension between idealism and excess run through both the system and the setting.
First Edition (2001)
The first edition of Exalted established the core ideas of the setting: Solar demigods returning to a world that fears and misunderstands them, the cyclical nature of history, and a rules system built to support cinematic, over-the-top action. Mechanically ambitious and sometimes uneven, 1e is remembered for its raw creativity and its strong mythic identity, laying the foundation for everything that followed.
Second Edition (2006)
Second edition expanded Exalted into a much more detailed and mechanically dense game. It refined the core dice system, greatly expanded Charm trees, and deepened the cosmology and political structure of Creation. While often criticized for complexity and bloat, 2e remains a rich source of setting material and mechanical experimentation, especially in its later supplements, including statblocks for some of the major players of the setting.
The revised Second Edition, often referred to as Exalted 2.5, attempted to address the most serious mechanical issues of second edition without discarding its overall framework. Combat flow, defensive mechanics, and Charm interactions were streamlined, making the game more playable while preserving compatibility with existing material. Many long-time players consider 2.5e the most stable incarnation of the second-edition ruleset.
Third Edition (2016)
Third edition reimagined Exalted from the ground up, both mechanically and thematically. The system emphasizes narrative momentum, resource flow, and social conflict alongside combat, with a stronger focus on consequences and character perspective. While significantly different from earlier editions, 3e aims to better support long-form play and the thematic weight of godlike power in a fragile world.
Exalted: Essence (2023)
Exalted: Essence is a streamlined reinterpretation of the setting, designed to be more accessible while remaining broadly compatible with the themes and cosmology of earlier editions. It reduces mechanical complexity, unifies subsystems, and emphasizes narrative flexibility over detailed optimization. Rather than replacing third edition, Essence functions as an alternative ruleset—aimed at groups interested in the core ideas of Exalted without the full mechanical weight of previous incarnations.
